For Brightview Shelton, inspiration was literally next door. The bucolic Connecti- cut setting has a working farm adjacent, so designers settled on contemporary farm- house styles, with lasting appeal to multiple generations. “The farmhouse design has become pop-
ular,” says project lead Erik Anderson, AIA, vice president of PROCON, a design/build firm in Manchester, N.H. “People moving here want it to feel like home.” The surrounding rural area has recently
undergone rapid development. But the farm next to Brightview Shelton’s 161 independent, assisted living, and memory care residences is a local fixture likely to remain in place. The porte cochère’s exposed trusses start a repeating design element, one seen again

in the library/café and extending back through the building, and out to the porch adjoining the garden. Other farmhouse features include pic-
turesque windows in assorted shapes and sizes, reflecting the area’s artisanal carpen- try tradition. Window mullions keep the scale residential while harkening back to the farmhouse theme. A decorative cupola as well as the barn lights on the residents’ balconies extend the farm motif. Leveraging the pastoral setting, the bio- philic-friendly design brings the outside in, but with a contemporary twist. Beautiful outdoor spaces flow into beautiful indoor ones. The two-story main lobby extends from the front door to the back courtyard.
