As well as showcasing their technical skills our students demonstrated their confidence and resilience. Our employer- judges were really impressed by what they saw, one said ‘the students are amazing, they have all worked really hard and I’ve been really impressed with how they have solved problems and supported each other throughout the day’.

COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE WINNERS!

whom the judges thought stood out from the crowd during their competition.

By Rosie Fearn, Director, The Lancashire Colleges

The winners of the 2025 Lancashire Colleges’ Skills Competition Programme have been announced.

This March, some of Lancashire’s most talented young people took part in the second annual Lancashire Colleges’ Skills Competition Programme testing themselves against teams from across the area and showcasing their skills to local employers and business-owners.

The Skills Competition Programme took place over an action-packed fortnight and at 11 different venues, making the most of the amazing facilities at our local colleges. I’d like to thank the Lancashire Skills and Employment Hub and NOCN Group who sponsored us this year. I’d also like to thank the many business- leaders, awarding organisations and others who volunteered their time as judges including Fagan and Whalley, Bay Light Morecambe, Giant Leap Childcare, Ineco, British Gypsum and local NHS Trusts.

This year’s programme was bigger and better than ever with over 300 students from across our local colleges competing in 11 different competitions. The stakes were high, the winning team in each competition had the honour of taking a trophy back to their college as well as winning gold medals. Runners-up were awarded silver and bronze medals and a small number of very special ‘Medallions of Excellence’ were awarded to students

Every single student did their college, their tutors, their families and Lancashire proud. It was inspirational to see how they handled the pressure and supported each other during what was a really challenging programme. Competitions allow young people to demonstrate their skills and to showcase qualities that are valued by employers like time-management, problem-solving and team work.

We asked our students for a word to describe their experience; they said it was “fun” “exciting” and “challenging”.

Now they have shown what they can do, the competitors will be encouraged to apply to take part in the National Qualifiers of WorldSkills UK. Who knows, if they continue to do well they might even be selected to join the UK Squad for WorldSkills 2028!

Winning Team

We know that Lancashire’s employers really value these skills and I would encourage every employer to think about how you can build your future workforce by working with your local college. You can do this in many ways, for example by offering work experience, industrial placements or apprenticeship opportunities. You could come to speak to our students about their career options, arrange a visit to your business, or meet with our teams to ensure that courses are focussed on the skills your industry needs. Our colleges can also create bespoke and flexible training packages to help you to build the skills of your current workforce, helping to grow your business.

Leonie Thompson, NOCN Group Head of Assessment and Quality Assurance, said “The Lancashire Colleges’ Skills Competition is a fantastic platform to celebrate talent across a variety of diverse industries. As a skills charity that champions the growth of trades and professions that meet the needs of the future, we hope this initiative inspires other competitions to maximise employability.”

Lancashire’s Colleges help over 60,000 young people and adults to learn and develop new skills every year and work with over 9,000 employers making sure they have the skilled workforce they need.
