72 BUSINESS PROFILE

Northlight

Pendle Leisure Trust HOW WE ARE POWERING PENDLE

A proud local business which can trace its roots in east Lancashire back two decades, Speakman Contractors has amassed a varied and expansive client portfolio but is never happier than when working on projects which benefit its local community.

The business offers a full turnkey solution, beginning with initial design and project management, incorporating a full suite of building, electrical and repair services, through to ongoing maintenance and compliance.

And, more and more, Speakman has been working with a wide variety of organisations to help them meet their CSR objectives by embracing and harnessing the power of green energy.

The team has worked on some of Pendle’s – and the county’s – most iconic buildings, from new construction to breathing new life into heritage properties.

Whether it’s helping local businesses flourish, providing homes for families to love, or delivering first-class community facilities, Speakman has become the first choice thanks to its accountability, honesty, integrity and reliability.

And the company’s support of its local community extends to training the next generation of workers.

More than 50 local people have completed their apprenticeships with Speakman since it launched its multi-award-winning training programme in 2009, highlighting the company’s commitment to investing in people, nurturing skills and strengthening its local economy by helping to promote and develop talent.

NORTHLIGHT

Northlight was an eight-year, £32m project to turn a disused mill into a flagship mixed- use development in Pendle.

Speakman Contractors was brought on Northlight Chris Speakman Tel: 01282 415 864 | Email: info@speakmancontractors.co.uk | www.speakmancontractors.co.uk

board by developer Barnfield at the very beginning, and the two worked in tandem for the entirety of the Grade II-listed building’s regeneration.

The team designed and installed a system to deliver power and data connectivity throughout the building, covering everything from lighting to fire alarms.

The ribbon was cut in early 2024, launching 85 two-bedroom apartments, education facilities, 103,000 sq ft office and industrial work space, 25,000 sq ft business storage space, and leisure and cultural facilities.

“Placing modern demands on an old building presents several challenges, but we have the expertise to work sympathetically on heritage projects and are extremely proud of the end result,” said Chris Speakman.

PENDLE COUNCIL

For 15 years, Speakman has been the go-to contractor for Pendle Council and its property portfolio.

The team offers a 24/7/365 response service for a range of the council’s public buildings, offices and green spaces.

Work covers electrical installation, building maintenance and emergency repairs and is

backed by full accountability, including open- book accounting and GPS tracking.

Chris said: “We couldn’t be prouder to be the first choice of the council. The work is always issued through a comprehensive tender process, but time and time again the council chooses us above the rest.”

PENDLE LEISURE TRUST

For more than a decade, Speakman has worked on maintaining and upgrading community facilities in Pendle, including Westcraven Sports Centre in Barnoldswick and Colne Leisure Centre.

The work over the years has included delivering changing room and washing facilities, installing and maintaining the electrical network, and general building repairs and maintenance.

Our green energy services team have also installed LED Lighting schemes and Solar Photovoltaic systems.

Chris said: “We’re seeing increasing demand for our green energy services. As well as improving environmental credentials, which is obviously very important for public image these days, it helps dramatically reduce energy bills, which is vital for keeping these buildings open.”
