GOING INTO ORBIT


Lancashire businesses are being called on to back the vision of the county as a leader in the fast-growing space and satellite industry.


Senior figures from the county’s private and public sectors and universities have met with national government bodies to highlight Lancashire’s space sector strengths.


The gathering in Lancaster was hosted by The Lancashire Enterprise Partnership (LEP). It examined the county’s rich aerospace pedigree plus several other key industries – including energy, chemicals, telecoms, electech and cybersecurity – which are all set to play a key role in the space economy.


University-led R&D capabilities, such as the advanced engineering expertise of the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and Lancaster’s cybersecurity specialisms, combined with assets such as the AMRC North West at Samlesbury, are also seen as having a major role to play as the space sector evolves.


Lancashire-based businesses present at the gathering included Victrex, BAE Systems, Milliamp, Quantum Base and Adriani.


These were joined by representatives of the North West Aerospace Alliance, both the East and North and Western Lancashire Chambers of Commerce, the Boost business support service, the county council and the LEP,


Staff from the region’s universities - including leading academics from UCLan, Edge Hill and Lancaster University - also attended along with members of UKSEDs, the national space society for UK students.


National government departments and agencies - including The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), Innovate UK, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), were also there.


Speakers discussed a range of topics, including the advantages of the county and wider North West working together as a space industry cluster and what businesses can do to get more involved in the regional, national and global space sector.


The event also reflected on the recent official launch of the North West Space Cluster and its strategy which aims to drive collaboration and competition and enable the promotion of the region’s space capabilities.


Debbie Francis, who chairs the LEP, said: “For areas like Lancashire to maximise the opportunities offered by the emerging space market, and to fully utilise the county’s strengths in sectors like aerospace, engineering, cybersecurity, chemicals, telecoms and energy, we need to collaborate.


THE DIGITAL AGE? Most modern businesspeople know branding is more than just a logo. But with the opportunities of the digital age, could your brand be missing some tricks in performing at its best?


Early on in my career, I was lucky enough to have something of a baptism of fire into the world of holistic branding. Moving to Australia in 2011, after leaving a small creative agency in Manchester, I landed a job with the country’s leading branding agency and found myself working directly alongside Hans Hulsbosch on the rebrand for Virgin Airlines Australia.


Hulsbosch is renowned for having pioneered the concept of combining brand strategy and product development, and the rebrand project encompassed everything from the brand logo to the crew uniforms, to sonic idents, and even to the food served onboard.


Everything down to the structural-design of the coffee cups had to be on-brand. It was a real fast track on top-level branding and felt a long way from banging out brand guidelines in Manchester.


After working on similar campaigns for major brands from Nike to Tesco, the top-to-toe branding process is something that I still firmly believe in for firms of all shapes and sizes who want their brands to perform at the highest level.


The emphasis on digital in the modern brand experience has opened-up new and exciting opportunities for brands compared even to the still relatively analogue era of 2011.
