While apprenticeships have traditionally been seen as a route for school leavers, we recognise that learning and professional development does not stop at 18.
Increasingly, adults are turning to apprenticeships, whether to upskill in their current roles or embark on entirely new career paths. At Preston College, we are seeing a growing demand for apprenticeship opportunities among professionals who are eager to enhance their skills and advance in their careers.
In response to this shift, we are proud to offer a diverse range of apprenticeships and higher apprenticeships (Level 4 and above) tailored not just for young people, but also for experienced professionals looking to stay ahead in their industries. This flexibility ensures that apprenticeships remain a valuable and accessible route for career progression, no matter where individuals are in their professional journey.

HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE IN BURNLEY TO THRIVE
Burnley is facing an employment crisis among 16–24 year-olds. In fact, youth unemployment in Burnley is double the national average, leaving many young people wanting to move away to seek new opportunities…
To learn more about the issues being faced locally and understand what can be done to help, we spoke to over 700 young people, community groups, local businesses, schools and colleges.
Through this research, we learned that plenty of employers are on the same page, often sharing concerns over an ageing workforce and wanting to recruit locally. Many employers would like to see pathways and in-work support put in place to help young people into employment.
Collectively, we know that no single organisation or group has all the answers, but each has the potential to reduce the barriers that the others experience.
So, what can local employers do to help? Employers can work to re-design their
like videos, insight days, work trials and volunteering pathways can be used to encourage more younger people to apply.
Where possible, employers should create entry level job roles for young people and reach out to local schools to offer work experience and other activities.
Offering further support for young people
We’re proud to have launched the Thrive Hub in Burnley. Located in the town centre next to Burnley bus station, the hub offers advice and support for young people looking for work locally.
