CHORLEY: BUILT ON INNOVATION, INVESTMENT,

AND COMMUNITY By Councillor Alistair Bradley,

Leader of Chorley Borough Council Market Walk

As leader of Chorley Borough Council, I am proud that the future of our town is so bright. Chorley is a place where opportunity, innovation, and community come together – and we’re only getting started.

Chorley has seen transformative investment across the board, including our town centre and wider business investment programmes. With significant funding secured and more to come, we are revamping the heart of our town, improving public spaces and infrastructure and breathing new life into both town and village centres. We have created an attractive destination for businesses, residents and visitors offering tremendous opportunities for entrepreneurs and retailers.

And while more housing in the centre of town will attract people, she would like to see more office space within easy walking distance of those homes, creating jobs that will attract young people.

She says: “They need to be able to get to work and not be tempted to get on the train or a bus to Preston or Manchester.

“They may be dazzled by the bright lights of the cities but we need to try and make it easier for them to stay here. They are our future workforce.

“Chorley is a great place to be. Businesses come here because it’s easy to get to. There are great transport links and obviously with the regeneration we’re seeing it’s even more appealing to people and businesses.

“We just need to make it easier for them to stay here and also continue with leisure and hospitality plans that will make them want to stay in Chorley after work and spend their money here.”

Stephen Alty is director of family firm Festive Lights based at Charnock Richard. The e-commerce firm employs around 70 people.

He says the perception of Chorley as a market town has changed and points to it’s the energy of its younger population. He believes upskilling and keeping young people in the area is vital.

Stephen adds: “The perception of Chorley from a youth perspective has vastly changed and I think that’s only a positive thing.

“We’re an e-commerce business, so we’re very dependent on energy, and a lot of it is coming from the younger end of our workforce.”

Carl Spencer, founder of digital marketing agency Thule Media, based in Chorley, says those behind the town’s regeneration have done a “great job” for the last 20 years. Though he believes more could be done to invest in and promote the borough’s natural environment, which he sees as a major asset to its fortunes.

He says the town’s location, facilities and ease of access sets it up well for the future and points to people moving out of Manchester to Chorley to live, saying: “The future is bright.”

And he adds: “The great thing about Chorley is, it is so convenient and for me as a climber and a mountain biker, I can be in the fells in five minutes. It is the perfect place to be.”
