ARE TARGETS THE BENCHMARK FOR

SUSTAINABLE GROWTH? By Noel Ferguson,

Trident head of net zero and energy solutions

For businesses striving toward net zero, the path can feel overwhelming. Rising energy costs, stricter regulations and growing stakeholder pressure make sustainability essential rather than optional. But how can businesses ensure their efforts are both credible and impactful?

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a leading framework for aligning business climate action with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target.

Backed by science, it provides clear, measurable pathways that help businesses set credible targets and comply with evolving regulations.

Over the last 16 months, companies setting SBTi-aligned targets have grown

by 113 per cent, while Forbes 2000 companies declaring net zero goals have risen by 40 per cent.

This underscores a shift from ambition to accountability. SBTi’s transparent and rigorous framework enables businesses to set targets that withstand scrutiny and demonstrate meaningful climate action.

Adopting science-based targets not only strengthens credibility but also delivers operational benefits, such as access to sustainable financing, improved energy efficiency, and enhanced stakeholder trust.

Businesses that act decisively position themselves to thrive in a net zero economy, which contributed £74bn to the UK in 2023. The power to lead change is in your hands.

driving the understanding of how to develop the funding market the sector really needs.”

Chris Skidmore told the event: “Desmos is here to help and scale up companies who have proven technologies that can provide those solutions- get in contact if we can be of help, we want to hear from you.”

Desmos’ latest expansion plans aim at establishing the firm as a leading global sustainable investment bank, specialising in supporting green and sustainable technologies across emerging markets, with future plans to also expand into the US in 2025.

Chris Skidmore said: “Since announcing the creation of Desmos, I’ve been taken aback by the level of support but also by the tremendous demand from companies focused on the technologies and solutions of tomorrow to provide a sustainable future. They require guidance and support to deliver their scale up ambitions.”
