LEADING THE MARKET


The first stop of our 2025 tour of Lancashire’s hotspots takes us to Chorley. Leaders from business and local government came together at Park Hall Hotel and Spa with regeneration taking centre stage


Chorley’s long running regeneration story of how to create the model 21st century market town is entering its next chapter and it promises to be a page-turner.


Following a successful bid for ‘once in a generation funding’ of £20m from the government, Chorley Council has appointed an expert design team to progress the town centre transformation.


The specialist team of architects, engineers, design consultants, is currently working on plans for three ambitious schemes.


These include the creation of a new civic square in front of the historic town hall which will act as a new destination, with event, residential and commercial space, plus parking.


Plans are also been drawn up for a residential scheme on the site of the council’s current depot on Bengal Street. Here the aim is to deliver high-quality energy efficient homes in the town centre, enhancing the opportunity for people to live and work centrally.


Then there is the refurbishment of the council’s Union Street offices with the potential to attract tenants who may be interested in operating from an accessible town centre location.


The full project is expected to cost around £40m, with the government’s funding pot being doubled by the council.


And they are not the only plans emerging off the drawing board. Earlier this year the

go-ahead was given for landmark town centre living scheme on the site of Chorley’s former magistrates court building.


The town’s early regeneration success can be traced back to 2013 when the council bought the Market Walk shopping centre for £23m. In 2018 it embarked on a large-scale development scheme, including a £15m retail and leisure extension, that gave the town centre a new lease of life.


The latest schemes aim to create community spaces, homes, commercial spaces and business opportunities.
