enforcement. Furthermore, it is not aworry toWaterCompanies as it does notmean cost to them. Thiswould probablymean that the cooperation required to establish such a databasewould difficult to establish and coordinate. As for uptake given the information available to septic tanks owners, prior to the January 2020 deadline, uptake has beenminimal.Any short timeframe fixwould therefore appear to be something of a pipe dream for regulators or law-makers.

SYSTEMS NOWAVAILABLE

The bulk ofwork that has been done to date it appears has been generated by sellerswishing tomarket a propertywhich has a septic tank systemthat has been highlighted to themby the solicitors or a surveyor involved in the sale. Furthermore, in themodern age, whilst in certain circumstances it is possible to install a septic tank it is nownot the‘norm’,withmost newer installation taking the formof small STP. Amodern systemutilising a basic STP produces treated effluent to the requirements of the regulationswhich can go straight to openwater courseswithout creating any potential pollution issues, providing of course they are properlymanaged andmaintained. Allmanufacturers offer training for their products, but installers, as is the casewithmost industries, generally get their experience the hard way as they install systems on site.Aswith all ground operations no one site is ever exactly like one already experienced so each set-upwill be individual, similar to others but never the same. This iswhere the experience comes in. STP design is based on the requirements of theGBRs and building

regulations partH2.The plant size is related usually on the number of bedrooms on the property if a domestic situation or the number of people in aworkplace. For example, a 3 bed property requires a 6 PE plant apparently (PE stands for‘Population Equivalent’).The PE relates to the number of people in a building or using the building. On the larger scale than a domestic location, in say an officewith 30workers, this thought to be equivalent to 10 domestic residents, so its PE number is 10. But larger siteswill of course need larger plants and industrial and commercial sites evenmore so.
