It is recommended that a glass of liquid not be drained in one continuous draught. The pharynx serves
as a common passageway for both food and air, and the pathways for these cross, so intervals while drinking are recommended to avoid choking. Sitting down while drinking is also recommended, as are the following table manners:
Sitting down while eating Eating together and sharing food Serving others first, especially guests
Having the host begin eating first and finish eating last (This is the opposite of Western table manners.)
Taking food in smaller portions than needed
Not leaving anything on the plate (this too is different from Western tradition, where we are taught to always leave a small bit on the plate.)
Eating with the right hand Waiting for everyone to finish before leaving the table or floor cloth Washing hands and mouth before and after eating Brushing teeth before and after eating (Miswak) Sharing food with relatives, friends, neighbors, the needy, and the destitute
Eating from the corner of the plate on your side (during one-dish communal eating), rather than from the middle or the other side of the dish
