Offshore Industry 2017; on stabilizing and new opportunities
ROTTERDAM Offshore Industry 2017 was all about ‘The Next Chapter’. The event took place on the 18th of May in Lantaren- Venster, Rotterdam, where CEOs of prominent European companies shared their vision on important issues in off- shore. It became clear that the offshore, oil- and gas industry is still not experiencing plain sailing, but the situation is slowly improving itself. Opportuni- ties are mainly to be found in the offshore wind energy market, as well as activities involved in the dismantling of oil rigs.

Robert de Bruin, spokesman for the inter- national offshore contractor Van Oord, which was one of the companies present that day:
“The subject matter today was twofold. During the first part it was determined where we stand right now. Then we got to talking about the next step, which is: what are the opportunities in store for us?” It is common knowledge that the oil- and gas industry has been hit hard over the past few years. The low oil price put paid to many offshore projects. According to De Bruin the situation has been stabilized into ‘the new normal’. Experts, such as Wood Mackenzie are expecting a full recovery for the oil- and gas industry, but it is still uncertain when this is to set in. The oil price is a determining factor. Expectations are that by 2020 this amounts to 53 to 85 US Dollars a barrel. “However, these are assumptions,” De Bruin clarifies. These same experts believe it will take another two to three years before the overcapacity in the Offshore Field Service (OFS) sector is put to an end, which became clear during the Offshore
Industry event. De Bruin: “There is a whole range of equipment, such as jack-ups, semi-submersibles, anchor tugs and platform supply vessels, which are used to service the oil- and gas industry, which still encounter new bouts of overcapacity.” The OFS sector has made progress in terms of cost reduction, smarter ways to work and innovation. “There is a lot going on,” according to De Bruin. Despite the fact that the oil- and gas industry was going through a rough patch, there are still opportunities up for grabs for Van Oord. They have made some huge steps in the offshore wind industry. Investing in new vessels such as the Nexus and the Aeolus. The Nexus was the first notch on their belt for the installation of offshore wind parks. The first project for this ship was the Gemini offshore wind park, which has been officially opened on the 8th of May.
Opportunities The main opportunities are to be had in the dismantling of oil rigs in the North Sea. This will occur from 2020 onwards. “Between 2020 and 2040 there is a market for 100 billion US Dollars according to experts”, says De Bruin. There are more than 700 offshore oil- and gas installations in need of dismantling. Another opportunity for business lies in the offshore wind industry market. In the north west of Europe these windmills off the shore are a booming business. De Bruin is discussing the latest German tenders of the wind industry, which are now entering the market without government subsidies being involved. These windmill parks without government funding are an alternative to fossil fuels. They offer lots of opportunities to offshore companies who are focusing on this renewable energy market.

ROTTERDAM Offshore Industry 2017 stond dit jaar in het teken van ‘The Next Chapter’. De bijeenkomst vond plaats op 18 mei in LantarenVenster te Rotterdam, waar de CEO’s van toonaangevende Europese bedrijven hun visie deelden over belangrijke offshore onderwerpen. Duidelijk werd dat de offshore olie- en gasindustrie nog steeds in zwaar water verkeert maar langzaam stabiliseert. Kansen zijn er vooral voor de offshore windindustrie en dankzij de ontmanteling van boorplatforms.

Robert de Bruin, woordvoerder van inter- nationale waterbouwer Van Oord, één van de aanwezige bedrijven deze dag: “Eigenlijk was het onderwerp van de dag een tweeluik. Tijdens het eerste deel is vastgesteld waar we
nu staan. Vervolgens is gesproken over de volgende stap, wat zijn de kansen?” Iedereen weet dat de olie- en gasindustrie de afgelopen jaren een aantal rake klappen heeſt gehad. De lage olieprijs zorgde ervoor dat er veel offshore projecten zijn stilgezet. Volgens De Bruin is de situatie inmiddels gestabiliseerd tot ‘het nieuwe normaal’. Experts, zoals Wood Mackenzie, verwachten herstel in de olie- en gasindustrie maar het is nog onzeker wanneer dit herstel begint. De olieprijs is hiervoor bepalend. Richting 2020 wordt een olieprijs van 53 tot 85 USD per barrel verwacht. “Dit zijn echter aannames”, verduidelijkt De Bruin. Dezelfde experts verwachten tevens dat het nog zo’n twee tot drie jaar duurt voordat de overcapaciteit in de Offshore Field Service (OFS) sector is verdwenen, zo werd duidelijk tijdens Offshore Industry. De Bruin: “Er is een hele range van equipment, zoals jack-ups,
semi-submersibles, anchor tugs en platform supply vessels, die werkt voor de olie- en gasindustrie, hier is nog steeds sprake van frisse overcapaciteit”. De OFS sector heeſt slagen gemaakt op het gebied van kostenreductie, slimmere manieren van werken en innovaties. “Er gebeurt veel”, aldus De Bruin. Ondanks het feit dat de olie- en gasindustrie in een neerwaartse spiraal terecht kwam, zijn er ook kansen voor Van Oord. Zo heeſt Van Oord een behoorlijke groei gemaakt in de offshore windindustrie. Hiervoor is geïnvesteerd in nieuwe schepen zoals de Nexus en de Aeolus. De Nexus was voor Van Oord de eerste kabellegger voor de aanleg van offshore windparken. Het eerste project voor dit schip was het Gemini offshore windpark, dat op 8 mei officieel geopend is.
Kansen Kansen ziet men voor een groot deel in de ontmanteling van olieplatforms in de Noordzee. Dit gaat vanaf 2020 een rol spelen. “Tussen 2020 en 2040 is dit een markt van 100 miljard USD volgens deskundigen”, aldus De Bruin. Er zijn meer dan 700 offshore olie- en gasinstallaties die ontmanteld moeten worden. Een andere kans zien bedrijven in de Offshore windindustrie. In Noordwest Europa gaat de bouw van die windmolens op zee als een sneltrein. De Bruin spreekt over de laatste Duitse tenders van windindustrie, die nu zonder overheidssubsidie op de markt komen. Zo verrijzen er windmolenparken zonder een cent subsidie, die dus een alternatief zijn voor fossiele energieopwekking. Deze windmolen- parken bieden weer volop kansen voor de offshore bedrijven die zich op deze renewable energy richten.
