Off the beaten track of traditional Italian tourism, right in the centre of Umbria, the green heart of the boot, lies Montefalco. Known for its lush hills, excellent olive oil, truffles and native Sagrantino wine, this village hides unmissable artistic and cultural treasures. Nestled on a 1,550ft hill from which you can
admire a 360-degree view of the surrounding valleys, the small city presents itself to the visitor with its compact and engaging 14th-century historic centre. The town has its heart in the circular central square, from which the various little streets branch off in a radial pattern, allowing you to discover every corner of the village. Right on this central square stands Palazzo
Bontadosi, which retains the name of the cardinal who made it his summer residence in 1400. According to local legend, it was occupied by German generals during the Second World War, who damaged the stone stairs in their escape. According to others, it’s inhabited by the
benevolent ghost of a widow who, betrayed by her husband, refuses to leave the building out of
shame. The stately historic palace was converted into a luxury boutique hotel in 2010, and while the widow’s presence hasn’t been witnessed since then, there are many other elements of interest that deserve note. Its 12 rooms are equipped with all the modern
comforts and furnished with a modern design while respecting the original structure, including wooden floors and impressive frescoed ceilings. On the ground floor, the wine cellar is stocked
with sought-after national wines and a wide selection of local products. What really sets the property apart is the
wellness centre. Dug into the stone where pantries and cellars once stood, this cosy spa is equipped with a relaxation area with herbal tea room, hammam, ‘emotional showers’, sauna and a truly stunning thalassotherapy pool inside what was once the ancient rainwater collection cistern. Palazzo Bontadosi — with its timeless and
