Chêne Bleu, La Verrière PROVENCE, FRANCE
Tucked away in the foothills of Mont Ventoux in France, lies a hidden Provençal haven, La Verrière. Set within a historic vineyard above the village of Crestet, this meticulously restored medieval priory overlooks the pristine Dentelles de Montmirail nature reserve amid wild forests in a UNESCO biosphere reserve. This nurtures an array of rare plants and animals, including 1,400 species of butterflies. The reserve is also home to the critically acclaimed Chêne Bleu wines. The estate has garnered worldwide recognition, pioneering regenerative viticulture. The fully staffed property caters for both B&B
guests and those looking for exclusive use. Its chefs have worked in leading restaurants. Guests can take in views of Mont Ventoux from the infinity pool or enjoy a classic Provençal sunset on the terrace. They can visit the state-of-the-art gravity- fed winery or learn about the estate’s various regenerative and environmental initiatives. These include a bamboo forest to filter wastewater, a wild boar ‘spa’ and the ‘SustainaBEElity’ project, which explores how bees can enhance wine quality.
Trails from the property offer spectacular hiking,
such as to the secluded ruins of the Abbaye de Prébayon. Cyclists can challenge themselves on the renowned ‘Le Géant’ of Mont Ventoux, one of the most demanding stages of the Tour de France. La Verrière is also known for its intensive wine
instruction, including the Chêne Bleu Extreme Wine Experience. This signature short course, run in conjunction with Vinécole and accredited by the WSET, offers wine enthusiasts of all levels a comprehensive education. Participants gain insight into wines from all major regions and grape varieties, as well as hands-on experience in the vineyard and winery. On Tuesdays, Vaison-la-Romaine hosts the
largest Provençal market in the region. The town is home to some of the most significant Roman ruins outside Italy, with the archaeological museum displaying a famous statue of the emperor Hadrian. The ancient amphitheatre hosts Vaison Danses, a renowned contemporary dance festival, while nearby Orange holding opera performances amid spectacular Roman ruins.
DON’T MISS During the summer season, admire Provence’s lavender at Sénanque Abbey or from Pont Saint-Bénézet bridge in Avignon
