Riu Palace Maldivas and Riu Atoll DHAALU ATOLL, MALDIVES
In 2019, Riu Hotels & Resorts embarked on a new adventure in the Indian Ocean with the opening of two establishments: Riu Atoll and Riu Palace Maldivas. Together, these hotels offer a comprehensive range of options, with a total of 440 rooms, making them an ideal choice for families, couples or groups of friends. Both hotels provide the renowned ‘All-inclusive by Riu 24-hour’ service, allowing guests unlimited access to a wide variety of dining and entertainment options. The four-star Riu Atoll, a ‘Riu Classic’ hotel with
264 rooms, is located on the island of Maafushi, while the five-star Riu Palace Maldivas, situated on the island of Kedhigandu, features 176 rooms and belongs to the ‘Riu Palace’ line, offering an extra touch of luxury for guests. The two hotels share a reception area and are connected by a walkway, where exclusive overwater rooms are found. Here, guests can enjoy the tranquillity of the Maldives, with some of the 24 rooms featuring private pools and the option of an exclusive floating breakfast. The Maldives is made up of around 1,200 small coral islands and sandbanks grouped together
in idyllic clusters. And, while the archipelago is known for these white sand beaches and crystal- clear waters, its true treasure lies beneath the surface. The reef surrounding Kedhigandu is rich in marine life but faces environmental and human- induced challenges that damage the coral cover. To address this, Riu has initiated the Blue Reef Reforest programme, which aims to restore the coral reefs in the area. The programme involves removing damaged
areas and planting corals in artificial nurseries, where they are cultivated until ready for transplantation onto the reef. The project also includes training sessions for Riu staff and guests, promoting responsible diving and snorkelling practices. The programme also educates on the importance of coral reefs as natural barriers against tropical storms and strong winds. What’s more, weekly talks are held in local
schools to raise awareness of reef conservation and how to enjoy nature responsibly. This project forms part of Riu’s sustainable strategy and conservation efforts, under the name ‘Proudly Committed’.
DON’T MISS Take part in the Blue Reef Reforest project, where you can learn more about underwater life, and have the chance to adopt corals
