Shipton Mill GLOUCESTERSHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM
Shipton Mill is a historic flour mill set in a beautiful Gloucestershire valley in the Cotswolds, near Tetbury. A river encircles the mill, which is home to wildlife such as otters, trout and kingfishers. The Shipton Mill team are driven by a passion for organic, regeneratively grown grains, which they mill into a wide variety of flours, including ancient, heritage and gluten-free varieties. Freshly milled flour is stored in a beautiful timber-framed barn and includes locally grown organic Maris Widgeon, Millers Choice and Torth y Tir, as well as grains such as Khorasan, emmer and einkorn, alongside the well-known classics for breads and pastries. The mill building houses the millstones used
for the ancient method of stone grinding. They sit alongside cherry-red roller mills dating from the 1930s, which the millers have painstakingly restored, giving them a second lease on life. The millers carefully test the grains, many of which are grown organically by local farmers, in the mill’s laboratory to assess their baking properties before determining which flours they will produce. They work with what nature and the landscape provide.
For other local things to explore, Chavenage
House in Tetbury is often open to visitors when not in use as a filming location, offering a unique opportunity to explore a famous manor house and its grounds. Westonbirt Arboretum offers stunning local walks among the trees. Travellers can enjoy a cream tea or dinner at the restaurant in nearby Calcot Manor Hotel, which also offers spa facilities. Visitors can drive to Stroud for the Saturday
farmers’ market, then stop at The Woolpack in Slad for lunch in Laurie Lee’s former haunt. The Five Valleys provide spectacular scenery for walking, with rolling hills and undulating valleys immortalised in Lee’s Cider with Rosie. For a more manicured landscape experience, visit the beautiful Rococo Garden in nearby Painswick. Wine-lovers should stop by Woodchester Valley, which produces award-winning English wines — you can buy bottles from their cellar shop or join a vineyard tour. A short hop over the border into Wiltshire lies
Malmesbury Abbey. Here, visitors can view an original Turner watercolour of the Abbey in the Athelstan Museum.
DON’T MISS Go antiques hunting in Tetbury, followed by lunch at The Potting Shed pub in neighbouring Crudwell
