Close to the coast of Norway’s southern archipelago, Boen Gård is an enchanting estate where heritage, nature and gastronomy converge. Closed to the public for generations and reopened in 2012, the property has been restored to its former splendour. Manicured parkland, historic buildings and outdoor areas retain their original character, while the main house has been reimagined with a new restaurant kitchen and period-appropriate interiors. Once-private wings now host two elegant


apartments for overnight guests, and three additional heritage buildings offer 18 rooms and 36 beds. The restoration honours the estate’s architectural story, creating a setting where authenticity feels effortless. Hospitality is shaped by the attentive team led by general manager Dagfinn Galdal and head chef Tomasz Rochon. Sustainability guides the kitchen, which is


nearly self-sufficient, thanks to extensive gardens of herbs, vegetables and berries, plus an orchard of apples and pears. Honey bees thrive on the estate, sheep and lambs graze along the riverbanks and wild salmon from the Tovdal River — caught by


licensed anglers. All of this fresh produce anchors a cuisine deeply rooted in place. Remaining ingredients come from small local producers. A highlight awaits beneath the main house:


the beautifully restored 18th-century wine cellar, unveiled in 2019. Once dormant, it’s been transformed with shelving and furnishings crafted from reclaimed materials. Stepping inside feels like travelling far beyond Southern Norway, with a curated collection featuring burgundy, champagne and German rieslings. The estate is also home to one of Norway’s storied


salmon-fishing grounds. Once frequented by British lords in the early 1900s, the almost-mile-long double-sided beat combines rapids and deep pools, with spots still named after historic guests. Carefully maintained riverbanks, fishing piers and shelters enhance the experience for groups of four to eight anglers. Set near the river mouth, Boen Gård offers consistent salmon presence throughout the season. Boen Gård is more than a restored estate — it’s
