54 New Year New You Personal development, careers & franchise opportunities

Saturday 5th January 2019

Let’s get down to business

Writing your New Year’s resolutions on a balloon is an unusual way of ensuring

success, but for one young woman it was the start of a booming new business venture. Becca Green talks to Ginetta Vedrickas about how she founded her new business

B

ecca Green, from Suffolk, is a style editor for an interiors magazine, but after having an idea for

a mobile gin bar, a New Year’s Eve spent in a cabin with friends made her determined to make her business idea a reality: “We all decided to write our resolutions on balloons and I wrote ‘Make The Gin Caddy a success’. The turn of a new year is a great opportunity to start or create something new.” Becca, 23, got the idea after

Becca Green with her favourite tipple

attending weddings where there were plenty of Prosecco vans, but nothing to suit her tastes: “As a gin lover, I asked myself: why hasn’t anyone created a gin version? I guess you could say I saw a gap in the market.” After scouring her area and finding nothing similar on the market, she met a local business owner — also a fellow gin lover — and presented her idea: “It went so well that she offered to invest and said: ‘If you don’t go ahead, you’ll regret it!’” Since then, Becca has been busy making her Suffolk-based business

would’ve been a nightmare but fortunately she was willing to dive in head first. Since then, she’s attended every event, serving G&Ts with a smile. I’m forever grateful.” Becca found the biggest hurdles

a success, despite admitting that she’s not especially entrepreneurial: “I’ve always been creative and extremely motivated, but I never had any intention of running my own business.” At first, Becca’s parents were hesitant as they watched her plough ‘hard-earned savings’ intended for a house deposit into starting up The Gin Caddy, including a sizeable chunk spent on converting a three-wheeler Piaggio van. However, Becca’s determination

won them over: “My mum’s been incredible. As a complete business novice, organising my books and taking out the right insurances

were ‘taking the leap of faith and having confidence in your idea’, but she harnessed her skills as a journalist, and background in PR, to get her business underway: “I started a website, created social media accounts and pestered everyone I could think of that it might be of interest to. As a journo, you understand exactly what a brand needs to do to get noticed.” Social media has proved the best tool: “Not only can you reach a wide and far-reaching audience, but even better, it’s completely free.” Last year, The Gin Caddy was a

much-loved fixture at festivals, weddings and private events, serving artisan G&Ts to gin lovers across the South East. Her best and biggest gig so far has been the University of Essex’s graduation ceremonies — ‘a whole week of gin-filled fun’. thegincaddy.com
