10 New Year New You Health, fi tness & nutrition Continued from page 8
you’re in a class with an instructor who knows what you need. You need time to recover after the
birth, and there’s no need to rush back to the gym, but it can help you feel strong again, physically and mentally. Looking after a baby is exhausting, and exercise is something you can do for you. At the time of developing our
Signature Method, I was post-natal and Antonette Dayritt — who worked on it with me — was pregnant, so the class is suitable for both. We don’t use any equipment so it’s really easy to modify and to take at your own pace, whether your pre- or post-natal.
As a new mum, what have you been doing to get back into shape? Kate: I’m just starting to get back into fi tness again. I work with my trainer, Nicole, at home in LA. We do a lot of Pilates, which is great for new mums, and I also do cardio workouts on my bike. Right now, because my youngest is so little, I’m doing what I can at home to be with my baby as much as I can.
How do you stay motivated to keep fi t all the time? Kate: I don’t think you can always be motivated to stay fi t, and taking breaks is absolutely fi ne, but the thing is, I know that I always feel better for it so I’m pretty consistent. Mixing up my workouts defi nitely helps to keep me motivated and I love dancing, so again, dance workouts like POPfi t are always good for me and stop me getting bored.
What’s the key to fi tting exercise into my daily routine, what with the time constraints of having a family? Steph: It’s diffi cult with young children; we have Mama/Baby classes three times a week, so a lot of mums come with their babies to workout. It’s sociable and relaxed, gets you out of the house, plus the kids love the music! Let the class be your motivation — if you enjoy it, you’ll make time for it.
Nutrition-wise, what do you swear by and why? Kate: I don’t have one thing in particular that I swear by, and
I’ve tried various diets, but I think really it comes down to balancing out what you’re eating. I love cooking for my kids and I think that makes you more aware of what you’re eating because you want them to eat healthily.
What should we be eating more or less of as a family? Steph: Reduce refi ned sugar as much as you can. There are loads of recipes for sweet treats that use alternatives. As long as my kids are eating lots of vegetables, I’m happy, but equally I’m all about everything in moderation — have your cake, eat it, and do a workout!
