a grinning Nicole Scherzinger. I’m sitting in the Shaftesbury
Avenue studio of Dr Wyman Chan, aesthetic dentist to the stars: Jessie J, Adele and Rebel Wilson to name a few. With 37 years of experience and over 15,000 whitening procedures to his name, I know I’m in good hands. His studio is clean, bright, and not even close to the fear-instilling dentists I’ve visited in the past. After a discussion about my teeth

already, so this treatment will brighten them even more.” The British treatment entails an
in-chair power whitening session, followed by two weeks of whitening at home using the kit provided. He asks whether I’ve used over-
the-counter, home-whitening kits before. I’m ashamed to say I have, fully aware of the hypersensitivity and enamel damage they can cause. “This is totally safe, and you
won’t feel a thing.” I lie back in the chair and let him work his magic. The treatment itself, which lasts
around an hour, starts with Dr Chan taking an impression of my teeth to create the trays for the home treatment. He then inserts a soft implement into my mouth to protect my gums, before applying the power-whitening gel. While I wait for the special light to activate the gel — which takes about 45 minutes — I relax and watch a film. Once the session is over, Dr Chan
talks me through using the home- whitening kit — a top and bottom tray and two syringes of carbamide peroxide gel. I’m told to use wear the trays for between one to two hours, twice a day, for two weeks. At first, they feel odd, but I get used to them after the first day. After a fortnight, I stand and
