Viva veganism: Where to eat it
With a new wave of restaurants off ering imaginative plant-based menus, Nicola Trup discovers that there’s never been a better time to go vegan
forms, at least. Veganism has gone mainstream, with more and more of us turning to seitan sausage on our pizza, caulifl ower steak for dinner and oat milk in our coff ee. The Vegan Society estimates there are around 542,000 vegans in the UK (more than three times as many as a decade ago); Veganuary is fast becoming the new Dry January; and many of us are cutting down the quantity of animal products we consume. And it’s never been easier to dabble in vegan dining. You might think veganism is
P
synonymous with buddha bowls and the cult of #cleaneating, but you’d be wrong. Plant-based junk food is having a moment, with a roll call of restaurants adapting our favourite guilty pleasures. Craving pizza? At Purezza in Brighton, sourdough pizza bases
ut away the pepperoni, set down the steak and wave farewell to your fl at white... in their current
come cheeseless or topped with mozzarella and ricotta alternatives. As for burgers, go for the ‘bleeding’ B12 burger at Mildreds, or anything on the menu at The Vurger Co, both in east London. You’ll fi nd vegan doughnuts
and fried ‘chicken’ in the capital, too. But it’s not just specialist restaurants that are going big on plant-based eating. Wagamama has been trialling a vegan menu, while Pret now has three veggie branches in the capital, with a big selection that’s entirely free from animal products. And the trend extends to
eating in, too. Ocado, Tesco and Sainsbury’s have expanded their vegan ranges (try the latter’s barbecue pulled jackfruit), while cookbooks such as Bosh! by ‘vegan Jamie Olivers’ Henry Firth and Ian Theasby, and Gonzalo Baró’s Vegan Recipes From Spain, can show you how to cook delicious plant-based food at home. Who’s hungry?

R
ice is many things to many people: it’s versatile, recog-
nisable and loved the world over. However, there’s a common misconception that when it comes to nutrition, rice is too carb-heavy to be considered healthy. There’s no question that all rice contains carbohydrates — which is actually an essential component of anyone’s diet — and that’s okay. Fuelling your body for exercise and general everyday life calls for carbohydrates in some form. The problem isn’t around the food itself, but lies more in our individual ability to control the portion sizes we dish up. Rice is, as we’re all well aware,
notoriously diffi cult to get right when it comes to portion control. Fortunately, VeeTee has created a range of rice pots — two perfectly sized portions of rice that can be purchased together as one pack. Not only does this give customers a no-hassle solution to over-estimating on their rice, the pots are ready after just one minute in the microwave. This makes them the ideal accompaniment to a healthy last-minute meal. Another common misconception
is that all microwaveable food is bad for your health. While this may be true of some products, VeeTee has taken extra steps to ensure
