Financial & legal services New Year New You 25

Free yourself from financial problems

Get your finances in shape with these simple steps — Paul Eoin explains how they could help you save thousands in the new year as well as help you prepare for the years to follow

Shop around It’s easy to pay more than is necessary for all sorts of things, such as utilities, mortgages, credit cards and insurance. Even if the offer was the best available when you signed up, it may no longer be as competitive as it once was. Just a few minutes spent researching on a free comparison website could help you keep those extra pounds in your own pocket and save thousands of pounds each year. Whether you decide to set aside

a few hours one weekend to review all your regular outgoing payments in one go, or 15 minutes at a time to review your contracts one by one, this commitment could help you save thousands by the end of 2019.

Savings plan Fewer and fewer of us have much saved up in our bank accounts and often we’re living paycheck to paycheck and regularly dipping into our overdrafts. Why not resolve to turn that around this year and begin a regular savings plan? By diverting a small fraction of your income into a separate savings account each payday, you’ll be amazed at how quickly this builds up into a useful fund for emergencies (and maybe even

travel plans). Slowly increase how much of your income you divert into savings and see how much you can regularly save — probably without even really noticing.

ISAs Once you’ve begun building up your savings, it’s important to ensure your money is working as hard for you as you worked to earn it — make sure it’s earning a respectable rate of interest. Remember too, to make use of your tax-free ISA allowances. Basic Cash ISAs allow you to earn interest without paying tax on the interest, and other types offer extra benefits as well. If you’re saving up to buy a house, for example, a Help To Buy ISA can offer a 25% boost on funds in your account when you complete the sale. A Lifetime ISA will offer a 25% boost on your funds when you turn 60. Stocks & Shares ISAs are also a great option for those who want to invest their savings while still taking advantage of the tax-free interest earnings. Do take the time to research

these options fully, though, as the penalties for early withdrawal can be harsh.

Pension plans Check out gov.uk/check-state- pension to see what your state pension position is at present. You’re currently able to top-up your national insurance contributions for the last few years, which could be worth taking advantage of if you’ve been a student or unemployed at some point in the last eight years. There’s no guarantee how long this ability to top-up past years will be available, so don’t delay.
