LIFE BY LEXUS 32

CRAFTED FOR LEXUS The ancient Japanese concept of Takumi

is essential to all Lexus does. The Takumi master craftsmen are guardians of the ancient philosophy, applying the human touch to every aspect of Lexus design. Each Takumi master has a minimum of 25 years’ experience in their chosen field. Before becoming a Takumi, candidates undergo a rigorous testing process, including the folding of a seemingly simple origami cat – with a single hand (their non-dominant hand) in under 90 seconds. It’s this attention to craftsmanship that inspires the concept of Crafted for Lexus – a carefully chosen collection of sophisticated and timeless accessories produced by a new generation of master craftsmen and exclusively sold through Intersect by Lexus. Each range or item has been selected for its complete commitment to the art of design – all pieces are handcrafted and unique to Intersect by Lexus. Take, for instance, the perisphere ball created by Moses Nadal in his small Williamsburg studio. He worked with the exclusive, rich red upholstery leather featured in the Lexus LFA model. The perisphere ball is a playful embodiment of the Lexus interior. “The ball has a very interesting geometric pattern. We did a diamond top stitch that’s influenced by traditional auto-upholstery techniques, so I think it’s an interesting hybrid of the handcrafted technique mixed with a very modern leather and a traditional lacing upholstery top-stitch,” shares Nadal. The Glass Vase, a hand-blown vessel

created by Andrew O Hughes is another example of Lexus reimagined. The vase is frosted all the way around, except for a single, vertical, flat facet, that draws attention to the intersections of light within. “[It’s] an exercise in optics and light,” explains Hughes, who’s a member of Urban Glass, a non-profit art centre that focuses on education and providing a work space for independent artists.

THE GALLERIES This public gallery has been created

to feature everything from product concepts, custom exhibitions and installations. The third-floor Private Gallery can transform for culturally relevant programming concepts such as full immersion events, art installations, film screening, panels and performances. The latest event was the Circular Capsule

Collection (C3), a showcase of a more sustainable future – demonstrating how meaningful design can help transform an industry. C3 represented the culmination of the 2017-2018 CFDA + LEXUS FASHION* INITIATIVE, and featured unique designs from the five finalists, which focused on fashion’s environmental, social and financial impacts.
