he posted the fourth-fastest time. “As always on the Dakar, there
were some small issues, but overall, we were really pleased with the day’s performance,” he said, adding that he felt it was the toughest stage on Dakar 2019. Unfortunately, Ten Brinke/Panseri’s race came to an end on Stage 8, when they suff ered transmission failure on some of the biggest dunes in this year’s race. This meant that De Villiers/Von Zitzewitz became the sole supporting crew for Al Attiyah/Baumel. The fi nal stage ran in reverse order
and it was decided that De Villiers/ Von Zitzewitz needed to wait for Al Attiyah/ Baumel. So they started the stage, but then pulled over and waited in the dunes for 55 minutes before their team- mates launched into the stage. They then followed in close formation. The two Toyota Hilux crews
completed the entire fi nal stage together. And while it cost De Villiers and Von Zitzewitz a place in the overall standings, De Villiers’ Top 10 record remains intact. “This victory was long overdue,”
said Hall. “But the organisers made sure that this year’s race will long be remembered as one of the toughest in the past decade.
“WINNING THE DAKAR IS NEVER EASY. THIS YEAR’S RACE WAS NO EXCEPTION AND BROUGHT A ROLLER-COASTER OF EMOTIONS FOR THE TEAM.”
“Winning the Dakar is never easy
– there are many people trying. This year’s race was no exception and brought a roller-coaster of emotions and results for the team.” “Obviously, we came here to try to win the race,” said De Villiers, “but once that dream ended, we were happy to support Nasser’s and Mathieu’s eff ort. If we couldn’t win it ourselves, the next best thing was for one of our team-mates to take the victory, and I’m overjoyed at the fi nal result.” “We’re very happy to win the Dakar
– not only for ourselves, but also for Toyota and the entire Toyota Gazoo Racing SA team,” said Al Attiyah. “Everyone’s worked so hard for so long and really deserves this. Thank you for letting us drive this car.” Al Attiyah/Baumel’s victory at Dakar 2019 means that Toyota Gazoo Racing has now won both of the world’s toughest automotive races – the 24 hours of Le Mans and the Dakar Rally. For Toyota Gazoo Racing SA, the win in Peru is the cherry on top of an amazing Dakar record. “This is the one spot we needed,” said an elated Hall after the 41st
edition of
the Dakar. “And it feels amazing to fi nally win.”
