AFRICA ISN’T FOR SISSIES!


Toyota technicians learnt that durability is one of the most crucial aspects for vehicles designed for Africa during a tough challenge in the 5 Continents Drive (5CD). The 5CD is a long-term world tour which allows the technicians to gather practical information that will help them design better cars. On the African leg, they covered more than 10 000km through several countries on two routes, one from Arusha in Tanzania to Johannesburg via Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana, and the other from Windhoek in Namibia to Durban via Lesotho. The project also included shorter


drives in Kenya, Morocco, Togo, Benin, Cameroon and Senegal, with the teams joined by representatives


from Toyota SA Motors (TSAM) and other African countries. The 5CD teams had already faced


fierce dust and heat in Australia, freezing cold and treacherous mountain passes in the Americas and urban highways in Europe. Africa presented new challenges, including unforgiving terrain, high altitudes and encountering wild animals along some of the worst roads in the world. TSAM President and CEO Andrew


Kirby says the aim of 5CD is “to enable Toyota technicians, engineers and a varied crew of other partners to get out from behind their desks and actually feel the road, experiencing first- hand the way vehicle performance is impacted by the wide variety of driving conditions around the world”.
