A HUB OF EXCELLENCE A new manufacturing institute and research centre has opened in

Kloof, KwaZulu-Natal and aims to be Africa’s hub of manufacturing excellence.

The Toyota Wessels Institute for Manufacturing Studies (TWIMS) will welcome its first students in 2019 and aims to become the continent’s leading hub for manufacturing research. Students will follow manufacturing- focused curricula developed by top academics and delivered by the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS). “Manufacturing holds the key

to the long-term, sustainable development of the South African and African economy,” says Prof Justin Barnes, Executive Director of TWIMS. “Unfortunately, this sector’s contribution to our gross domestic product is in decline. We hope to address that by developing a new generation of world-class, business-minded manufacturing specialists.” The institute will initially offer manufacturing-focused Master of Business Administration (MBA) and post-graduate diplomas. The

MBA will include electives in lean operations management, lean supply chain management, African trade and industrialisation, green manufacturing and future manufacturing. Financial support will be available to students from previously disadvantaged groups. The centre will also host non- academic programmes for executive development, including short courses, specialist conferences and thought leadership seminars. Dr Johan van Zyl, President and CEO

of Toyota Europe, believes the creation of a deep manufacturing culture contributed to the development of Asian economies and SA needs to build a similar culture. “The development of such a culture can transform South African society,” he says. The TWIMS was funded by the

Toyota SA Educational Trust, which received seed funding from the Wessels family and Toyota Motor Corporation.
