Behind the screens
Every detail counts when 1,200 guests are watching. We chat to some of the Travel Weekly crew to discover what they do backstage
Long before the sun rises on the big day, the tech crew arrives at the Globes venue, the JW Marriott Grosvenor House London, to set the stage. There’s a meticulous process to follow: spotlights need to be perfectly positioned, sound and lighting equipment double-checked and the autocue set up.
Meanwhile, the hotel team is getting the ballroom
ready following any previous events. Rowan Fisher, an events executive at Travel Weekly parent company Jacobs Media, says: “They transform the whole room in no time – it always amazes me how smooth they make it look.”
HOME IN ON THE ACTION Later that morning, over at the Travel Weekly headquarters, the editorial team is hard at work ensuring that those unable to attend in person can be part of the action online, setting up social media posts and a Facebook livestream. “I prepare for Facebook Live interviews by researching the nominees and their companies,” says news editor Robin Murray. “I’ll have questions ready, but I love the unpredictability – after all, the interviewee has just come off stage, so you never know what they’ll say!”
SOCIAL CIRCLES The digital team, meanwhile, is tasked with capturing and posting the night’s highlights on social media. “I help prepare our strategy on the morning of
the event by looking through the running order,” explains Travel Weekly content executive Lauren McCarthy. “This is so I know where I need to be at certain times to get the best angle for videos. “I love putting all the clips together at the end
of the event to create an Instagram reel. It gives viewers a brief but thrilling overview of the event.” At 7pm sharp, the curtain rises and the
reveals begin: the surprise celebrity host, the entertainment acts, the lavish dinner, the dazzling outfits and, most importantly, the winners. “I never get tired of seeing the audience’s
response and excitement when the celebrity hosts and acts appear on stage,” says Fisher. Follow Travel Weekly’s social sites to make sure
you can keep up with the action come January. }
