ACROSS THE POND It’s been just as busy for the transatlantic market, as the number of UK-US flights hit record levels in July. BA has already announced it will operate a record-breaking number of weekly flights from London to North America in summer 2025. Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines has launched a Heathrow-Orlando winter service, and Virgin Atlantic has returned to Las Vegas from Manchester and, after a decade-long pause, will be resuming its flights from Heathrow to Toronto in 2025. There’s still more in the way of new routes. Norse
Atlantic Airways expanded its US network with the launch of thrice-weekly flights from Gatwick to Las Vegas in September. The Norwegian-owned carrier also introduced three services a week from Gatwick to Cape Town this autumn, adding a third option to the BA and Virgin Atlantic flights to the city.
MIDDLE EASTERN EXPANSION The Middle East has also seen a huge surge in traffic, particularly with Saudi Arabia opening its doors ever wider to tourists. Virgin Atlantic announced that it will be serving Riyadh, while BA has reintroduced its London-Jeddah service after a five-year hiatus. Low-cost airline Wizz Air will also introduce flights from Gatwick to Jeddah in March. Elsewhere in the region, Etihad is doubling its Manchester-Abu Dhabi frequency in December; Qatar Airways has added an eighth daily Heathrow flight to Doha; and Royal Jordanian Airlines has made its Stansted debut with flights to Amman. It remains to be seen how airports will adjust to
the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES). Its introduction was recently postponed again from a planned launch date of November 10, with no indication of a revised timescale. When introduced, it will require travellers to the Schengen Area without EU passports to have their fingerprints and pictures taken on arrival. More green initiatives are also on the horizon, as
airlines gear up to increase their use of sustainable aviation fuel under the requirements of the EU’s SAF mandate, which is due to launch next year.
