York’s chocolate trail hits the sweet spot
Visit York has launched a campaign sponsored by York’s Chocolate Story, marking 250 years of confectioner Terry’s in York. The York Chocolate Trail is a free self-guided tour featuring well- known chocolate highlights across the city, and hidden gems with a chocolate connection. Also on the trail is York Mansion House, home of the Lord Mayor of York, whose idea it was to send bars of Rowntree’s chocolate to troops fighting in the First World War; Fairfax House, which houses the furniture collection of chocolate magnate Noel Terry; and York Castle Museum, where visitors can see a recreation of Terry’s sweet shop. The tourist board is distributing 40,000 copies of the walking trail and free copies can be collected from the Visit York Information Centre on Museum Street. There are new Visit York website pages and dedicated social media activity with a chocolatey twist, with fans encouraged to share their discoveries along the York Chocolate Trail using the hashtag #yorkchocolatecity. Michelle Brown, leisure
marketing manager at Visit York, said: “There is definitely a sense at the moment that York is having something of a chocolate revival. In this new campaign we want to inspire visitors to delve deep into York’s indulgent chocolate past.”
