Outlander hailed as new Braveheart of tourism

Attractions across Scotland are seeing huge increases in visitor numbers, thanks to popular TV series Outlander.

With the third series of the

show starting in autumn 2017, VisitScotland chief executive Malcolm Roughead hailed it as the new ‘Braveheart of tourism’. It is encouraging visitors from

around the world to come to Scotland to experience the landscape that inspired the series, in the same way that thousands travelled to the country after the release of Braveheart in 1995. Between 2014, when the show

first aired and 2016, Doune Castle (pictured) – which doubles as Castle Leoch in the show – has had an unprecedented 91.8% increase in visitors, from 47,000 to 90,300. In VisitScotland research, Outlander

was the most-mentioned TV or film inspiration for people – especially

those from the US – wanting to come to the country, above Braveheart, Harry Potter and Highlander. Roughead said: “We have been

absolutely blown away by the response globally to the Outlander series and the direct impact it has had on visits is truly exceptional.” Scottish locations to have benefited

from their association with movies or television shows include the Wallace Monument in Stirling (Braveheart); Rosslyn Chapel (The Da Vinci Code) and Glen Coe (Skyfall). visitscotland.com/outlander

MEET THE TEAM

w Meet the TravelGBI team at the Fox@ExCeL TravelGBI editor George Clode and his colleagues will be at the Fox@ExCeL during WTM London to meet readers. Pop in to see us and say hi – there will be bacon sarnies for

readers, and copies of the November issue, complete with the WTM London feature. Editor George said: “It’s great to meet folk face-to-face during

WTM London – it’s a one-stop-shop for the trade, so we can catch up with our readers from the UK and overseas. “It’s also

useful for delegates to pick up a copy of TravelGBI and get an overview of what they can expect as they head into

ExCeL.” foxbars.com travelgbi.com
