“We’re certainly seeing the benefit of Yorkshire hosting these huge events and are welcoming even more visitors to the World Heritage Site from overseas. Organised groups from Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and China are increasing as well as the
number of independent travellers.” Justin Scully, general manager,
Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, Ripon
“We are seeing a lot of people from France and Germany, and even some from as far as China. I think the way Yorkshire is promoted on a global scale has definitely boosted

The inaugural Tour de Yorkshire took place in 2015, and the 2017 edition of the race saw 2.2 million spectators and global media coverage. Next year’s Tour de Yorkshire will be
extended from three to four days, and in 2019, Yorkshire will host the UCI Road World Cycling Championships. Sir Gary said: “We had a record-
breaking Tour de Yorkshire this year: 2.2 million roadside spectators turned out, and Yorkshire was showcased to 180 countries around the world on TV. “This live ‘postcard’ beaming round
the world is one of the main reasons we put on events like this.

“And with the Tour de Yorkshire 2018 confirmed as a four-day race, the women’s race doubling from one to two days, and, of course, the UCI Road World Championships in 2019 – these opportunities will be even greater. “With our world-class arts and
culture, dynamic cities, sandy beaches, dramatic coastline, spectacular countryside, vibrant market towns, chocolate box villages and great family attractions too, Yorkshire has something for everyone and there are more reasons than ever to put the county on your must-see list.”

“Our visitor figures are up and this is an events-driven increase brought about by the efforts of Welcome to Yorkshire and our local council. High-profile events such as the Tour de Yorkshire, Scarborough Cricket Festival and Armed Forces Day create great publicity for the whole county, which we can see is generating real increases in
business and leisure tourism.” Richard Frank, managing director, Crown Spa Hotel, Scarborough
“We’ve seen a real increase in visitors from France and the US and even China. Yorkshire is a real brand globally and events such as the Tour de Yorkshire have really put the county on the world map, attracting so many more overseas visitors.”
Louise Larcombe, marketing manager, Tropical Butterfly House and Wildlife Centre, Sheffield
