WHAT TO DO

You could easily spend your entire time on the Strip, meandering from one glitzy venue to the next, but why noÌ m>ki Ìimi Ìo wn` oÕÌ Üh>Ì 6i}>Ã Ü>Ã liki LivoÀi the skyscrapers set in? That starts with a trip to Fremont Street, the heart of ‘old’ Las Vegas where Elvis and the Rat Pack made their mark, now given a modern twist with funky street art and shops in shipping containers, but still retaining its edge. Surround yourself with early 20th-century kitsch at

It’s said to be one of the few big- ticket sights that actually lives up to its hype – but having heard that many a time just meant I had even bigger GZRGEVCVKQPU CVVCEJGF VQ O[ ƂTUV ƃKIJV over the Grand Canyon. Setting off by helicopter from Boulder City, a half-hour drive from downtown Vegas and a city that owes its origins to housing workers for the Hoover Dam, we soared over the famous dam, across wide open landscapes and sweeping scenes until YG TGCEJGF VJG ITCPF ƂPCNG s VJG Grand Canyon. We glided high above the snaking

path of the Colorado River, close enough to point out millennia-old striations in the rock faces, to see VJG UWDVNG XCTKCVKQP HTQO ƂGT[ TGF and burnt sienna to deep purple and dark grey, and appreciate the jagged rock formations along each edge. Yet it wasn’t until we landed to look at the canyon from above that I really understood its scale – not from the bird’s-eye view of a helicopter but from ground level, looking down into the yawning chasm of the canyon below. And rest assured, it didn’t disappoint.
