Haven Hafan y Môr Holiday Park, Haven


THE FACTS: Hafan y Môr Holiday Park is set a few miles east of the popular Welsh coastal town of Pwllheli on the Llyn peninsula, which forms the northern edge of Cardigan Bay. It sits in the shadow of Wales’s highest peak, Snowdon, and is close to Porthmadog and Abersoch, which are both popular with sightseers. The park underwent a £13 million upgrade last winter as part of Haven’s Vision of the Future plan to invest about £100 million in upgrading family-friendly facilities at five parks across the UK.

WHAT’S NEW: The investment in new facilities at the heart of the park has been well spent, offering visitors an impressive activity and leisure hub. The climbing walls and Aerial Adventure high-ropes assault course have been augmented with a junior ropes course and a fabulous 4X4 off-road track. Other attractions include bungee trampolines, a sand play area for little ones, an adventure playground and new dragon boats on the lake. Guests can also hire bikes, play sports such as football or basketball, go sailing on the boating lake or – our kids’ favourite – take part in a group Segway outing. Close by, a large new dining area includes a pub, the HMS Glendower, the new Coast House Bar and Grill and an all-you-can-eat Pizza Deck. Bookings are recommended at busy times.


ACCOMMODATION: We stayed in one of the park’s new Platinum with Decking caravans, set in its own private gated road with lake views, close to the coast and golf course. Caravans in the exclusive Harlech View area offer extra space in large three-bedroom units and are only a few minutes’ walk from the beach and the park’s activity area. The extra space meant the caravan was easily big enough for the five of us and the privacy ensured there was plenty of peace and quiet. Hafan y Môr offers a range of accommodation options from luxury caravans to smaller statics arranged over an expansive area. It also has luxury lodges and apartments that come in three grades: Standard, Comfort and Comfort with Veranda.


THE VERDICT: As the weather was pretty wet during our visit, we spent most of our time making use of the holiday park’s facilities. The large indoor pool complex was an excellent way to keep the kids entertained with its slides, flumes, wave pool and lazy river. Hafan y Môr is huge, which means there are different zones, each with its own character, as well as plenty of flora and fauna for visitors who enjoy being at one with nature on this popular stretch of the Welsh coastline.
