The best of your letters, comments and social media this week Tipto: AAAs roll call is endorsement of organisation

Your ‘Tipto Turns 20’ article in last week’s Travel Weekly highlighted the reason why this great organisation was formed. Twenty years ago, the vertically integrated travel companies were marching through the trade, buying up independent agency businesses. To counter this, more than 25 like-minded independent operators banded together to protect their futures. So it was great to run down the list of this year’s Agent Achievement Award winners and see that every regional award was won by an independent agent. It’s a great result for these hardworking, knowledgeable businesses – and underlines the hard work and positive activity driven by the Tipto organisation, both past and present. Graham Balmforth, former Tipto chairman

Air levy: Aviation sector needs a carbon tax like a hole in the head

Story: Government considering automatic air ticket ‘carbon charge’ Yet again the government wants to put the boot into aviation, despite the fact it has the highest APD in the world. It is low-lying fruit, and an easy tax to implement. We need another offset scheme like a hole in the head. Patrick Doyle

Cook: Angry shareholders may not accept £750m Fosun takeover

Story: Thomas Cook’s retail director reassures trade of ‘business as usual’

I’m not convinced the stakeholders will accept this deal. People with shares are very angry about being misled [as they see it] at the May update. Shares are still slipping, so I’m not sure it’s a done deal. Paul Gilmour

TravelTime World @traveltimeworld Thanks to everyone who came along to Pitch Perfect. Another great event in aid of @hospicestfrancis

Trading: Up and down but busy

Post: Huge turnaround in trading, with nine consecutive weeks of passenger growth and strong late sales. Does this match what you’re seeing? Matthew Ruth: It’s up and down but really busy. Some summer deals are really cheap, but for family all-inclusives, prices have firmed up, so it’s getting harder to convert.

Nude: No chance!

Post: Waltham Abbey Travel goes nude for window display competition Jane Berry: Blimey. If I did that, we wouldn’t see a customer for dust!
