Agents win Jet2 contest with naked attraction

Ben Ireland

Agents at Waltham Abbey Travel took a stark approach to a window display competition – bagging hundreds of pounds of marketing spend with Jet2holidays by going ‘nude’ outside their shop. Te Essex agency ensured full

exposure for the business as four of the team stripped off behind a Jet2holidays-branded banner. Te ladies drew plenty of

atention to the window, which was peppered with Jet2holidays posters, despite being outside the shop. “When we first thought about

it we thought we had beter just go bold and really go for it,” said partner Teresa Marie. “We thought we’d bring it out to the street because that’s where it all happens. “Tere’s a wine bar across the road

and everyone was looking over at us. We had a team of people waiting to take pictures. Tere were six of us ready to go, but there was only space for four behind the banner.” Marie said the stunt had helped

raise the agency’s profile in the market town, near Enfield and Cheshunt.

Heatwave and Brexit blamed for operator’s failure

Last summer’s UK heatwave and Brexit uncertainty contributed to the collapse of Cuba Holidays’ parent, Te Holiday Place, according to filings on Companies House.

“We put it on Facebook too, and

everyone’s been asking us what we’ve got going on,” she added. “We’re always busy but we’re hoping a few of the people who saw it will come to us when they book their next holiday.” Fellow partner Gay Borland

Sari Donaghy, Teresa Marie, Sharon Hoy and Gay Borland

added: “It will raise our profile, but ruin our street-cred.” Waltham Abbey was one of 20

independents to win £500 to spend on marketing activity with the operator. Jet2holidays’ head of trade Alan

Cross said: “Our ‘Partnership to Success’ strategy is all about helping independent agents grow their businesses by boosting sales, and increasing visibility and awareness is a key part of that. Our window dressing competition does exactly that and the ladies at Waltham Abbey Travel outstripped all expectations.”

Heathrow faces chaos as staff confirm strikes

Firefighters and rescue staff at Heathrow have confirmed the dates for strikes over the peak summer, with British Airways pilots threatening to follow suit aſter BA failed on Tuesday in an atempt to win a High Court injunction. More than 90 firefighters and

fire and rescue staff voted to strike in a dispute over pay and plan to join more than 4,000 Heathrow workers in two-day strikes on August 5-6 and the bank holiday Friday and Saturday, August 23-24. An initial two-day strike by

workers excluding the firefighters is due this Friday and Saturday. A firefighters’ walkout would be

likely to shut the airport on safety grounds. Te High Court rejected a BA

application for an injunction against pilots’ union Balpa on Tuesday. Te airline said it would take the case to the Court of Appeal. BA pilots voted overwhelmingly to strike in a dispute over pay. Strike dates have yet to be confirmed. A separate strike by easyJet

check-in staff at Stansted, planned for Tursday (July 25), was called off. But union members were still planning to walk out on Friday, Saturday and Sunday without agreement on a pay deal.

Te company went into

administration in May with 450 customers abroad and 2,500 forward bookings. It owes creditors almost £12 million. Administrators Begbies Traynor

said: “Te unusually hot UK summer of 2018 resulted in low sales during that period.” It said “holidays were

discounted to atract customers”, impacting Te Holiday Place’s own margins and cashflow.

Ongoing Brexit negotiations

also had a negative impact on trading. Te report said: “Brexit resulted in poor exchange rates, which impacted upon holidaymakers who were thinking

of going abroad, with the actual price of holidays having risen.” Claims of unsecured creditors

are estimated at £11.7 million, while claims of employee wages, salary and holiday pay are estimated at £51,000. Filing history on Companies

House shows turnover dipped in 2018 to £33.8 million from £36.4 million in 2017, but directors were “optimistic about future trading”.
