The power of new technologies such as virtual and augmented reality are changing the way we design and make purchasing decisions. And the advantages are not lost on the flooring industry

Virtual reality has now presented us with unprecedented opportunities to visualise the sort of fl ooring we want within our homes, taking the stress out of even the most diffi cult purchasing decisions. Savvy manufacturers have invested in both virtual and augmented reality tools to create, often, a multitude of options in a variety of spaces and take the uncertainty out of what one described as the most “intimidating purchase decisions for a homeowner”. The US website Houzz uses AR in its View in My Room 3D tool to
allow users to scan virtual fl oors on iPhone, iPad, or Android and, simply by pointing to the perimeters, populate it with tiles in 3D – and even estimate the cost. More than two million have used it since it was launched in 2007. Similarly, creative digital studio Squint/Opera has created Hyperform, a tool that allows architects and planners to collaborate via VR. Its USP is that, as well as looking at models in neutral

He told them: “There is an endless amount of new products to choose from, and it’s a purchase that is not made often. AR technology, or to be specifi c, visualisers, makes the process of purchasing fl ooring a much less daunting task.
“The more we bring technology like this into the real world, the more consumers will start to expect it from our industry.”
