CARPET DESIGN AWARDS 2020 - AWARD WINNERS
Winners of the Carpet Design Awards for 2020 were announced in Hall 3, on January 11 and comprised the best and most outstanding products in the eight categories. The Awards highlighted the superior quality and outstanding design of the fi nest hand-made carpets and rugs. A jury of international experts, chaired by Graham Head, Vice Chairman of ABC Carpet & Home in New York City, selected the winners of these world- renowned awards in eight categories. He praised the “unique and innovative inspiring concepts - something in the fabric and texture of the carpet which has never been seen before.” Jury
member Stefan Amstad, of
furniture giant Möbel Pfi ster, said: “There were a great many entries this year, and I was impressed by quite a number of them. I was delighted to see a wide variety of designs, with Bauhaus and Art Deco being the main infl uences.” Set within a new presentation area, winning designs remained on display until the show closed. Other jurors included the artist and curator Nuala Goodman, designer Roos Soetekouw, and lifestyle blogger Martyn White.
CATEGORY 1: BEST STUDIO ARTIST DESIGN Product: Giovanni Manufacturer: Floor_Story This rug was based on an original ceramic, but it manages to bring the artist’s unmistakable style and sense of joy to life through his use of painterly colour layups, fi ll scribbles and graphic lines. The resulting bold, cartoonish look is enhanced by the unconventional and carefully delineated shape. The Jury’s verdict: “Fresh and true – an art rug that ticks every box.”
CATEGORY 2: BEST MODERN DESIGN SUPERIOR Product: Stairmaze Exhibitor: Jaipur Rugs Company This rug refl ects the beauty of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Jaipur, particularly the intricate designs gracing the subterranean architecture of the city’s step-wells. Diff ering pile heights accentuate the delicate tracery of the ornamentation, giving the fl oor covering a beautiful sense of depth. The Jury’s verdict: “The innovative construction techniques complement and enhance the design.”
CATEGORY 3: BEST MODERN DESIGN DELUXE Product: Strati Exhibitor: Jaipur Rugs Company Haphazard elements settle side-by-side to form a coherent story in this rug. Strati belongs to the Aakar collection; Aakar means shape in Hindi and encapsulates the idea of putting various forms in distinctive colours together to construct a rug where the sum is greater than its parts. The Jury’s verdict: “This is an innovative design featuring very appealing textures.”
