Print into metal technology adds colour


At this year’s show, GSM Graphic Arts will be showing examples of digitally printed anodised aluminium nameplates and control panels produced using its specialist ‘Print into Metal’ label technology. This


process enables multi-coloured images to be printed into the pre-anodised surface of the aluminium which is then sealed, to provide a hard-wearing and solvent-resistant finish. As the inks are digitally printed, the company is able to reproduce photographic quality images and detail, such as sequential numbering, barcodes and QR codes as well as multi-colour control panels and fascias. The digital printing technology provides a durable finish that has been tested for a minimum of five years’ UV durability, making it suitable for both exterior


and interior applications. Anodised aluminium is just one of the range of bespoke labelling processes offered. There is also screen and digital printing onto plastics, chemically etched stainless steel brass and laser marking. The manufacturer of industrial labels, nameplates and graphic overlays works with a wide range of plastic and metal substrates and finishes including vinyl, polyester, polycarbonate, aluminium, stainless steel and brass.

Miniature plastic enclosures house sensors for IoT


New designs in the electronic enclosure portfolio will be showcased by Hammond Manufacturing, together with its in-house modification capability. New designs include the 1551V and 1551SNAP extensions to the 1551 miniature plastic enclosure family. They are designed to house sensors and small sub-systems


installed in the manufacturing environment as part of IoT systems. They are available in rectangular, square and round versions with either ventilated or plain covers. A key feature is the snap-fit closure, which allows repeated opening and closing without tools. It also maximises the internal space for PCBs by eliminating screw fixings to secure the cover to the base. The 1557 is available in polycarbonate (sealed to IP68) and in ABS (designed to meet IP66). It has rounded corners and top face and can be located in dirty and damp environments. The 1552 family of handheld enclosures features an ergonomic


PVD coatings to extend tool life


PVD coatings for machining, wear and decorative applications are supplied by Hardcoating Technologies. The company supplies PVD coatings to a spectrum of industries. PVD coatings extend the life of tools due to its high hardness and wear resistance, says the company. HiPIMS technology allows it to


offer some of the highest performing PVD coatings available in the UK. This coating process results in a smooth surface structure which allows for


better release and wear properties on mould and forming applications. The company also offers HTB-TiB2, an alternative to DLC. This coating offers a very hard surface at around 4,000Hv and a low friction co- efficient of 0.1μ which lends itself to any wear and sliding applications. A re-grind and re-coat service is also offered for all tools such as drills, endmills and reamers. The service re-grinds and protects with a coating suitable to the material that is being machined.

Vacuum forming and toolmaking services for the plastics industry offered by MHP Industries, range from initial designs to completion. The company produces mouldings in most thermoformable materials


including anti-static, fire retardant and UV stabilised. The company supplies a range of mouldings for varied industries, from electronics enclosures to industrial transit trays and plastic panels for electric bicycles and even nose cones for wind turbines (pictured). The company has a design office and an in-house toolroom and offers five-axis routing, assembly, industrial packaging, patterns, models and prototyping, in addition to vacuum forming and toolmaking.

Components are cast and painted at one site


Machined castings and sub-contract machining are offered by MJ Allen Castings & Machining. Its sand foundries pour grey, SG and alloyed iron to 3,000kg, aluminium and copper alloys to 1,000kg and aluminium gravity die castings to 50kg. On-site there is also heat treatment, chemical and mechanical analysis, x-ray, dye penetrant testing, ultrasonic inspection and pressure testing. The CNC machine shop


covers x axis of 3.1m, y axis of 1.8m and z axis of 1.6m, with CMM inspection in temperature controlled environments. There are also paint and assembly facilities, enabling finished components to be achieved with a single order. The company carries ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certifications.
