Plating services extend from comms to mil-aero
Specialist technical plating services for electronics, telecommunication, aerospace, automotive and military applications are provided by Twickenham Plating Group. It delivers a range of plating services for customers throughout the world, including selective gold plating, reel to reel plating, and barrel / vat / rack plating. Finishes available include gold (pure and hard), silver, palladium, palladium / nickel, electroless nickel, nickel, black zinc nickel, tin, zinc cobalt (olive drab and black). The company can plate to a design specification or develop a specification or process to cost effectively deliver the desired finish. The technical team is able to carry out materials investigations and material specialists can advise about the different characteristics of finishes. The company
specialises in plating on different substrates from copper, copper alloys, such as brass and phosphor bronze, and ferrous metals, including stainless and carbon steel, to aluminium alloys and tellurium copper. The company’s quality management system is certified to ISO 9001:2015, and its environmental management system is certified to ISO 14001:2015. The Poole-based plating production facility has recently installed a 141 kWh solar PV system, partly funded by Low Carbon Dorset as part of the European Development Fund. The project will help to reduce carbon footprint with on-site solar generation of renewable power and save 70 tonnes of CO2 per annum.

UK visitors will have the chance to see SS 65 twin / sub-spindle turning centre. It breaks new ground, says XYZ Machine Tools, being its first foray into multi- spindle turning centres. The move was driven by demand from customers looking for increased productivity and reduced spindle downtime. The machine (pictured) has a 16.5kW, 4,000 revs/min, main spindle, 65mm bar capacity, with 200mm diameter main spindle chuck complemented by a 150mm chuck on the 11kW, 5,000 revs/min, sub- spindle, which has a 52mm bore. A German-built Sauter 12-position turret has live tooling at every station, with 100mm (±50mm) y-axis travel. Contouring is facilitated by the c-axis on both spindles which are equipped with a brake to allow substantial
milling cuts to take place. Maximum turned diameter is 380mm and the z-axis travel is 520mm. The machine is built around a 30° slant-bed base with linear ways for high performance positioning. Control is provided by the Siemens 828D ShopTurn 15-inch touchscreen control, which can be enhanced with the optional Siemens offline programming and CAD reader software if required. According to the company, this twin / sub-spindle turning centre with live tooling and y-axis arrives at a time when companies are bouncing back from the restraints of the Covid pandemic, but a time when finding skilled labour is challenging. The ability to machine parts in one hit, reducing part handling and idle time, will enable machine shops to
maximise productivity and spindle up-time while making use of available labour. Visitors will also see the XYZ 750 LR vertical machining centre and the latest versions of the ProtoTRAK controlled mills and lathes, including the RMX 3500 bed mill and RLX 355 ProTURN lathe. The latest generation ProtoTRAK control, the RX, has a 15.6- inch touchscreen combined with DXF capability to remove any requirement for a mouse to interact with editing of programs. The touchscreen also adds the familiar actions of pinch to zoom, twist to rotate, for intuitive use and allows closer inspection of the part program prior to machining.
