Figure 12.25 Arthrokinematics of knee extension. (A) During open chain knee extension, the tibia rolls and slides anteriorly on the femur. The tibia laterally rotates to perform screw- home rotation. (B) During closed chain knee extension, the femur rolls anteriorly and slides posteriorly on the tibia. The femur medially rotates in relation to the tibia, placing the tibia in a laterally rotated position in respect to the femur. This provides the screw-home rotation to lock the knee into extension.
