LIFE IN ANCIENT ROME He then went to Spain as governor, subdued
warring tribes, and brought peace to the area. On returning to Rome, he, Pompey and Crassus jointly ruled the city. Caesar brought in popular reforms such as redistributing land to the poor. Caesar then spent eight years as governor in Gaul (France), subduing the tribes as he had done in Spain, conquering modern Belgium and invading Britain. He added these lands to the Roman Empire. He built up his reputation by writing his account of the wars in Gaul in De Bello Gallico (The Gallic Wars).

The Roman Empire was built on the strength of its army. Above is a Roman soldier with weapons (short sword,
