Vatican II In 1958, a new Pope, John XXIII, was elected head of the Catholic Church. Shortly
afterwards, he announced the holding of a special council for the Catholic Church to update the teachings and rules of the Church. This Council became known as the Second Vatican Council or Vatican II. It was held
between 1962 and 1965. Pope John XXIII wanted the Catholic Church to adapt itself to changes in modern
society. Even though he died during the Council, the new Pope, Paul VI, continued the work.
