The Nazis and the Jews Hitler and the Nazis were strongly influenced by racial ideas or racism. They directed their hatred towards the Jews (anti-Semitism) and other groups. When they took power in Germany in 1933, they used propaganda against the Jews. They passed harsh laws against them, and also organised pogroms (See pp. 266–68). Other countries in Europe and outside failed to help the Jews. When the Nazis conquered large parts of Europe in World War II, they captured millions more Jews. During the war, the Nazis organised the mass extermination of the Jews in the Holocaust.
