Roman Lives – The Army Commander,
Julius Caesar Julius Caesar was born in 100 BC into an influential Roman family. He joined the army and proved to be an able soldier and officer in operations in Turkey. He returned to Rome and showed his gifts as an orator. The great Roman orator, Cicero, said of him, ‘Do you know of a man who... can speak better than Caesar? Or anyone who makes so many witty remarks?’
Life and conquests He was married three times into other influential families and this helped his rise to power. He also created alliances with other Roman leaders such as Pompey, a general, and Crassus, the wealthiest man in Rome.
