The country was in chaos, schools and universities were disrupted, up to 1 million people were killed, millions more suffered and the economy declined. Despite this, Mao had complete control until his death in 1976. After his death, the experiences of China during the Cultural Revolution taught many Communist leaders that this could not be repeated. Instead, the new leadership learnt lessons and they wanted to modernise China to catch up with other countries. The changes they brought in have led to China becoming the world’s second largest economy, after the USA.
