MAKING HISTORY In the 20th century, so much of the town had been excavated that conservation
of the ruins became a problem. Today, photography and computer reconstruction with 3D models are providing evidence of the lives of the people of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
What is left to excavate? About one-third of Pompeii has yet to be excavated but much more of Herculaneum is still covered. The volcanic layer over Pompeii is softer and thinner than Herculaneum. Also, a town has been built over the site of Herculaneum so it is more difficult to excavate.
