Contemporary Academic Writing represents a new and interesting approach to writing academic essays. Each unit uses interesting and original texts as a focal point, which have been specifically created to appeal to the book’s intended users. These texts are used as a platform for students to develop an understanding not only of sentence and paragraph structure, but as the book progresses, of a range of different text types. Along the way, language and grammatical structures which are prevalent in academic writing are discussed, and students are provided with opportunities to deepen their understanding of these topics through many different activities.
The main methodological approach used in the book is one of ‘guided self-discovery’, whereby students are encouraged to work things out for themselves so as to deepen their understanding, thereby enabling them to use this knowledge in real-life situations. Contemporary Academic Writing is also very collaborative, providing students with many opportunities to reflect on what they have learnt and to discuss these key points with their classmates.
