criticize: make a judgement backed by a discussion of the evidence about whether or not a position is correct discuss: explain, then give two sides of the issue and any implications
evaluate/assess: make an appraisal of the worth/validity/effectiveness of something in the light of its truth or usefulness explain: give details about how and why something is the case
how far/to what extent: look at evidence/arguments for and against and weigh them up
justify: show adequate grounds for decisions or conclusions and answer the main objections likely to be made about them
summarize/outline: give a concise, clear explanation or account of the topic, giving the main factors and leaving out minor details and examples
Task 9: Look at the list of problems which students often face when preparing for exams. Discuss each of these problems with a partner and try to suggest possible solutions. You can write them in the table.
Problem
1. I just read and reread my notes, but they don’t stick.
2. I’m not sure my notes will be easy to revise from.
3. I sometimes rush in and start a question and realize afterwards there were questions I could have done better.
4. I tend to spend a long time on a question I find easy, meaning there is no time left for more difficult questions.
5. Everything just spills out in a disorganized way.
6. My handwriting is very difficult to read. 7. I can never finish in time.
