Around Kingswear BY MIKE TREVORROW Kingswear
Platinum Bell Kingswear is inordinately proud that it will be fundraising for a new church bell to replace the one sold to buy a clock to commemorate the silver jubilee of Queen Victoria at St Thomas’s. It will be wonderful to commemorate 70 glorious years of Queen Elizabeth on the throne in such a fitting and lasting way. It seems so apt that we will be able to put back what the Victorians sold to honour Queen Victoria. It was in Dartmouth that Queen Elizabeth met Prince Philip so to have the bells peal out from both sides of the River Dart will mean that we will always have something special. We have been in contact with
John Taylors of Loughborough Bellfounders - the foundry that has cast bells for so many cathedrals and abbeys. The details of the new bell are as follows: a treble weighing 5cwt with a diameter of 29"(254Kgs) and is a new cast. The cost is £15,746 which includes the fitting plus an extra £2,000 to prepare the tower. We will also be fundraising before, during and after the celebrations. Once the fourth bell is in situ it will enable far more peals to be rung and we as a village are already taking campanology lessons on a weekly basis in various local churches so that we are ready. This really will be an enduring legacy for our Queen and the village. Kingswear Parish Council truly hope that the bell will be a lasting legacy that future generations will be able look back on this wonderful reign with pride as we do.
Congratulations
to Marie This year’s Kingswear Award has been presented to Marie Higgins of Marina Flats, (formerly of Wood Lane) next to the shop. This is an acknowledgement of Marie’s involvement over many years in the WI where she was a stalwart in the field of cakes. She has also quietly been taking cakes to folk who cannot bake for themselves, but who love a good cake. Husband Tony is very proud of Marie and was very touched by the recognition she has received from the village.
Raising the Hall’s
Profile In Kingswear village main hall an event was held in May where groups, societies, etc met together to show their wares, so to speak. There was an interested buzz as lots of people came to find out what was on offer from church activities, Kingswear Swords, U3A groups, the 2 Till 4 club, the River Dart Rowing Club, the Ramblers,
the Flower Club, the Coast Watch Initiative, the village orchard, Sustainable Kingswear and others which transferred by word of mouth rather than by display. Wine, canapés, tea and coffee
refreshed the assembled multitude in true Kingswear Fashion.
Sunday Market On Sunday 22nd
May another
event helped raise the community awareness of the Upper Hall when there was a ‘farmers’ market’ held with great success. A good turn- out suggested hopeful sales and the event was enjoyed by all, with, of course the usual tea, coffee and cakes.
Mango Adventure For those of you who have not
yet caught on, there is a welcome addition to the Kingswear habit of coffee and cake - do you spot a theme here? - with a very smart horse box decked-out as a travelling café. You can find this little delight down on the Marina, next to the Service Office, i.e. right by the water and boats. There are tables to sit to dine alfresco, and alongside the
