success of the temporary ‘1950’s trailer’ café in Royal Avenue Gardens during the summer last year. The original business in Victoria Road was soon doing well even during lockdown providing takeaways and local deliveries and was then very busy during the summer of 2021. The ‘cherry on the top’ of last year’s success was winning Gold in the 2021 Food Drink Devon awards in the Hospitality section. Why is it called Morellos? Because it is reminiscent of traditional Italian gelato and because Mum wanted the cherry logo! Having identified

the right niche for the new business, they set about identifying a local supplier of high-quality ice cream (they use ice cream not milk to make their yummy milkshakes). The award-winning Surfing Cow Ice Cream, based on a family farm near Plymouth, fitted the bill perfectly and they source small batch ice cream made to order as well as exclusive supply of their special cherry flavour. Indeed, the focus is very much on sourcing all their supplies and ingredients from local businesses as much as they can. The move to Fairfax Place

has allowed many changes and improvements to the business – the menu has been refined with more waffles and crepes, artisan coffee from Torbay-based Cartwright Coffee, scoop ice cream (especially for take away), home-baked cakes. With nearly 30 seatings inside and out (on the pavement), it is possible to enjoy the retro vibe of the 1950s décor (an eye-catching pink and blue!) and an uplifting soundtrack of popular music from the 1950s. The Takeaway hatch means you can enjoy the full menu experience at home or enjoy a takeaway waffle on a stick, a scoop ice cream or simple coffee perhaps to enjoy whilst sitting on the Embankment or in

Royal Avenue Gardens. The staff are very

friendly – and it’s a small team: just Lizzie, Mum and 5 staff. They’re always cheerful but often busy so get in touch

if you fancy working there.

Currently, Morellos is open 5 days a week from 11am to early evening but they would like to stay open for 7 days a week till late evening during the summer months, subject to finding the extra staff. Morellos has become very popular at lunchtime and evenings as the place to go for a speciality dessert following a meal e.g. takeaway elsewhere in the town. So, what’s on the menu? Here’s just a sample: sweet or savoury crepes, build your own waffle or crepe with a wide range of tasty toppings, sundaes including the ever-popular Banana Split or Knickerbocker Glory, cookies and special milkshake flavours – caramel, peanut butter, skittles and the

house favourite – cherry! Oh, there are gluten free and vegan choices and you can also enjoy a pot of tea served in traditional bone china. If you are a local resident, they will soon be introducing a locals’ discount card – known locals are already enjoying discounts of 10%. Morellos is not immune to the recent big price increases in foodstuffs and difficult supply chains but they are keen to give something back to loyal local residents. Morellos welcomes the whole family including your dog into the diner (every dog gets a treat). They even supply a ‘doggy’ ice cream – the Cowlick Creamery in Dawlish produces a peanut butter and banana ice cream from which the dairy and lactose is extracted to make it suitable for dogs. Look out for a Morellos pitch on

the South Embankment during Regatta and also their special Regatta T-shirts. They were very popular in 2021!
