back to motorists. Government would not fund such a scheme.

In terms of engine oil and lubrication requirements, hybrid vehicles act in a slightly different manner to more conventional vehicles. Infineum, a leading fuel and lubricant additive company, in a 2014 report stated that a distinguishing feature of hybrid electric vehicle is that the conventional engine switches off when the power available from the electrical cell exceeds that needed to propel the vehicle. This results in lower operating temperatures and higher stress during stop/start for the conventional engine which could lead to increased sludge and varnish than that of conventional engines.

What of service intervals? In the UK service intervals of 12,000 miles are usually expected by motorists. In

America some dealers are claiming that hybrid vehicles require oil changes every 5,000 miles or 10,000 miles if using a synthetic. The move to lower viscosity oils could also confuse matters if a motorist has been used to using a 5w30 engine oil in their hybrid ten years ago and today the same model but newer version of their much-loved car requires a lower viscosity lubricant of 0w20 or less.

For the aftermarket, electric cars might prove a challenge. Today a hybrid car is a more popular choice for motorists. They provide the assurance of extended ranges for longer distance journeys similar to that of conventional vehicles, with the benefit of lower emissions under town centre driving conditions.

VLS to exhibit at Automechanika in 2018

VLS has confirmed its commitment to exhibit the services it provides supporting the end user and aftermarket, by attending Automechanika at the NEC in Birmingham for a second year.

VLS exhibited at Automechanika for the first time in 2017, alongside other lubricant companies including Morris Lubricants, Millers Oils, Kerax and Mannol. The three-day exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham attracted 750 aftermarket exhibitors and 7,500 visitors to the aftermarket hall. The VLS stand received 250 visitors and 300 consumer leaflets were distributed. VLS were delighted to welcome two new members - Alexander Duckham & Co Ltd and Aslanol Ltd, as a result of the show.

David Wright, Company Secretary said “We decided to invest in attending Automechanika to enable us to reach out to a wider audience beyond the lubricants sector. We were delighted to make so many new contacts as well as open up new avenues to spread the word about VLS through motor factors and consumer brands such as the RAC. The event proved to be a worthwhile investment and we look forward to another successful show on the 5th to 7th June 2018.”

Verification of Lubrication Specifications is an independent organisation providing a credible and trusted means to verify lubricant specifications. For more information please call 01442 875922 or visit www.ukla-vls.org.uk.

VLS receives two new product complaints

VLS, the Verification of Lubricant Specifications, has opened two new cases following receipt of a duo of product complaints. Both product complaints concern 5W30 automotive engine oils and are now being investigated by the Technical Review Panel.

Both cases relate to the ability of the products involved to meet

their own technical specifications and the claims they make regarding OEM specifications.

David Wright, Company Secretary said “Misleading packaging is an issue that VLS has been keen to address, and we released guidance around the use of marketing claims on our website last year. These new cases suggest there may still

be work to be done within our industry to educate manufacturers. It is vital that workshops, fleet managers, haulage operators and motorists alike can have confidence that lubricants products can do what they claim.”
